Who am I? A
wife, mother, grandmother, church elder, hiker, campfire
musician, crafty person, dreamer, a
writer.
My mother
said I arrived a month late. I must not have liked it much since I'm
now
allergic to tardiness. Funny, I married a chronically tardy person. I must really love
him, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
Born in Vancouver, Washington to Ted
Timmons and (Carol)
Louise Timmons, now known as Carol Cloud, I lived with them for four years and then with one or the other until I
married Gary Cummings at the age of nineteen. We met at Walla Walla College and
unfortunately the marriage only lasted ten years. We had one son, Charlie, a bright
and funny guy whom I love very much.
I worked at a factory for five years while I
day-dreamed about what I might do with the rest of my life. Eventually Pacific
Union College offered me enough loans and grants so I could return to school
where I majored in accounting. I worked at the college radio station and marveled that
anyone would pay me to talk about God to the masses, or at least the few hundred,
or thousands that
tuned into KCDS, now renamed KNDL. That job kept me sane while I survived
classes like Finance, Statistics and CPA Review.
Following graduation a listener
called and asked me to interview for a staff accountant
position. That began four of the most difficult years of my
life. After the fourth tax season my boss called me in and said,
"You don't seem to have a natural aptitude for accounting." I
then confessed to him that I had applied for a radio station
manager position. But would they hire the accountant? Would they
want me?
I had been out of radio work for
four years. I did not expect to get the job offer. God had other plans. And in spite of the fact that five weeks
earlier, I met the man I would later marry, I took the job and moved out of state.
The relationship withstood the test
of time and distance and two years later Bob moved me home. My
new dream was to write, but my former accountant boss and later
my church called and the
next thing I knew, I was working a lot, being a mom, step mom, and soon, a
grandmother!
The busy-ness of life distracted me
from writing. Finally I quit my
job and wrote some articles and stories that got published in
Christian periodicals. See clips. The Flaming Sword of Eden is my
first novel to be published. Stay tuned, more are on the way!
Distractions come in many forms.
January of 2006 included a diagnosis of Lyme Disease. I
appreciated knowing the label, but the two-year plus healing
process has been a cross between a nightmare and a rollercoaster
ride. I praise God for Dr. Wayne Anderson of Gordon Medical
Associates who is "getting better at treating Lyme"
(his words).
And I feel better, not every day, but I'm having more good days
and the bad days are not so symptomatic.
Kathie Morgan took over my post as Chairman of the PR Committee
at our church. Now she is the queen of the newsletter. Thank you
Kathie for your commitment and hard work.
January of 2007 brought another ministry opportunity for Bob and
me. Kathy Schallert agreed to lead music and teach a Bible Study
in our home on Wednesday evenings. The elders came and anointed
me and I experienced a three and one half week good spell where
I had no Lyme symptoms. During that time I drafted the sequel to
my first novel, this one is called Enoch's Flaming Chariot.
The support of my Bible Study group has been invaluable.
When I was too sick to get out to church, it was like the church
came to me. Thank you dear ones for being there for me.
I attended the Writer's Conference at Mt. Herman near Santa
Cruz, CA, and started the marketing for the new novel, but the
return of Lyme and its co-infection's symptoms distracted me
again.
Now in May of 2008 I praise God that he is healing me and I am
able to write again. Through it all on my good days I continued
to manage rentals, do the accounting for my husband's
contracting business, do most of our cleaning, cooking, and
personal finance management. God is good! I have learned to be
wholly dependent upon him for not just my health, financial
security, but every area of my life.

From the February 2005 issue of The Outpouring,
the Santa Rosa SDA Church newsletterMember
releases Genesis Novel Sue
Karr, a church elder and Chairman of the church's Public Relations
Committee, has published her first book.
The Flaming Sword of Eden is a 244-page fantasy set in the time
between Creation and Noah's Flood. It traces the journey of Dawn, a
descendant of Cain, as she returns to Eden to exact from Eve the
answers to how and why sin entered the world.
Terri MacDonald, a member of Mary Ann McPheeter's Sabbath School
class, calls the book an awesome adventure.
"Sue Karr, a gifted writer and devoted daughter of God, brings His
precious Word to life in an exciting and intensely interesting way,"
Terri says. "It's a wonderful spiritual journey and a great read."
Sue, wife of Bob Karr and stepmother to Jered and Lauren, has been a
member of this congregation since 1999. She transferred here from
Centralia, Wash., where she managed a small Christian radio station,
KACS. She graduated from Pacific Union College in 1992 with a
bachelor of business administration degree, majoring in Business
with an Accounting emphasis and minoring in Music.
From 1988-1992 Sue worked at Angwin Christian radio station KCDS,
now known as KNDL, announcing on Saturday and Sunday nights and on
weekdays. She coordinated a prayer request program called Prayer
and Praise from 1990-1992.
"I have always enjoyed writing letters, and I had numerous pen pals
when a child," Sue says. "Then, I started writing silly stories and
letters to friends on my lunch hour as an accountant, and that
inspired my career change."
In the past few years, Sue has written Kathy Schallert's
biographical testimony for Women of Spirit magazine, an
article on the transformation of a "sleepy" church for Adventist
Review and a narrative for ListenMagazine about a high
school student reaching a crossroad while volunteering at a homeless
shelter. Sue originally
intended Flaming Sword to be a cookbook promoting healthful
living. As she wrote, the story took over and characters multiplied.
As the plot developed, the recipes fell by the wayside.
PublishAmerica released The Flaming Sword of Eden in
November. It is available from Amazon Books for $19.95.
Meanwhile, Sue is working on her second book, an inspirational
self-help book to be titled Lord, Where's the Fruit? It's
based on her recently concluded Women's Bible Study series called
"Lord, Make Me Fruity." She also plans a sequel to The Flaming
Sword of Eden.
